US announces new arms shipment to Ukraine

The Pentagon on Friday announced another arms shipment to Ukraine worth about $400 million, bringing total military aid deployed since February to more than $7 billion.

Why is this important: The latest shipment includes higher-precision artillery munitions as well as four Advanced High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which have enabled Ukraine to strike Russian military stockpiles and other targets behind the front lines.

  • The new cargo will bring the total number of HIMARS – a mobile rocket launcher – inside Ukraine to 12.
  • A senior defense official said the other eight systems were all operational and the pace of deliveries was dictated by the speed at which Ukrainian units are trained to use the systems, which were not previously part of Ukraine’s arsenal. .
  • The United States is also sending three tactical vehicles, spare parts and other equipment. The official did not say what type of artillery ammunition was provided, only that it would allow for more precise targeting than before.

State of play: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky underscored the importance of HIMARS and other longer-range systems in allowing Ukraine to change the equation in the eastern Donbass region, where Russia has used relentless artillery strikes to make incremental gains.

  • The rate at which new weapons and troops are integrated into the fight will be key to Ukraine’s efforts to stem its territorial losses and potentially launch a counteroffensive later this summer.
  • Russia currently appears to be preparing for the next phase of its Donbass offensive after completing the capture of Lugansk, one of the region’s two administrative regions.
