Sparrow receives a large amount of updated boosters

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The new Pfizer COVID-19 bivalent vaccine recall came from the federal government, and the health system plans to offer them in its Sparrow Medical Group primary care practices.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people ages 12 and older receive updated booster doses. A Sparrow official said it was important to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

“The new covid booster is important for people because it contains the most current covid strands, the omicron BA4 and BA5 strands,” said Sparrow Health System Pharmacy Director Todd Belding.

According to Sparrow, these strands are the source of most infections today. An average of 94 people tested by Sparrow Laboratories have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past seven days. That’s an 11% drop from the previous week of 106 cases.

“The previous vaccine didn’t have these strands and so it will provide greater immunity to people who are exposed to them,” Belding said.

The new updated bivalent boosters are already in Sparrow’s hands and they’re looking to get them into people’s arms in the coming days.

“So we’ve already received it at the pharmacy, we’re in the process of shipping it out to our SM-Gs for distribution. And they should have it in our offices at Sparrow Medical Group by Friday,” he said. -he declares.

The delivery comes as covid admissions to Sparrow Hospital are on the rise, officials say a seven-day rolling average increase of 16% from last week.

“We haven’t seen as many hospitalizations as we did at the start of the covid pandemic, but the new strains are prevalent and that’s going to provide people with the most up-to-date immunity against those strains,” Belding said.

They also said the side effects may vary from person to person, but the response is something similar to the time you received the vaccine before.

“You’re going to have a day or two where you’re going to be more lethargic, a sore arm, bruising if you experienced that with the first covid vaccine,” he said.
