Omdia: Cover Lens Module Market Will See Its First-Ever Shipping Drop in 2022 | Company

LONDON, Sept. 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Due to factors such as inventory clearing, inflation and geopolitical issues impacting consumer device markets, Omdia estimates protective lens module shipments will inevitably decline from 6.36 billion units in 2021 to 6.01 billion units in 2022, down 4.5% year-on-year (YoY).

Kimi Lin, Senior Research Analyst at Omdia said: “This is the first time that cover lens module shipments will register a decline in our experience. However, Omdia speculates that shipments will rebound slightly in 2023 if these influential factors can be mitigated by the end of 2022. As far as the long term is concerned, a slight drop in shipments is forecast to last a few years and depend on market saturation and weak demand for IT and CE applications.

Mobile phone applications account for the largest share of shipments (48.7% in 2021). Alkali-based glass materials including soda lime, aluminosilicate and lithium aluminosilicate are dominant in mobile phone applications. Lithium aluminosilicate (37.7%) overtook aluminosilicate (33.6%) and grabbed the largest share of shipments in 2021. Glass-ceramic material accounted for 3.1% share in 2021 in reason for adopting Apple in the iPhone. In contrast, the adoption rate of ceramic glass by Android brands was low due to limited capacity. The use of composite materials is increasing as it is a more cost effective option for using back cover lenses than the alkali based glass materials in the 3D form factor. Ceramic shipments for back cover lens usage reached record highs in 2020, but are expected to ultimately decline due to higher costs and fewer supplier sources.

On the other hand, CPI (colorless polyimide) and UTG (ultra-thin glass) are widely applied in foldable AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) display devices such as Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series, Huawei Mate X series, Xiaomi Fold series, OPPO Find N series, Moto Razr series, Honor Magic V series and Vivo X-Fold series. The deliveries of the foldable cover lenses applied in smartphones are still limited. Omdia believes that shipments will gradually increase while cost and performance will be further improved in areas such as the strength and crease of foldable phones.
