There are currently two flagship Android processors on the market. One is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 while the other is the MediaTek Dimensity 9000. Both are 4nm process chips but the former is produced by Samsung 4nm while the latter is produced by TSMC 4nm. In fairness, the two chips have very close overall performance. However, Dimensity 9000 has obvious advantages in CPU power efficiency performance. However, compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen1, Dimensity 9000 lacks some 5G technology. This chip does not support 5G mmWave. The market feared that this would cause Dimensity 9000 to crash in some countries and regions. In markets like the US where there is a strong punch for mmWave 5G, this can be a problem.
However, MediaTek general manager Chen Guanzhou says that’s not a problem. According to him, Dimensity 9000 has good product planning, marketing and other strategic customers. He further claims that even without millimeter wave 5G support, his production promotion remains intact.
Additionally, MediaTek is very pleased with the performance of its new flagship processor. The company said recently that sales of this chip were better than expected.
SD 8 Gen1 & Dimensity 9000 have their advantages
The Dimensity 9000 outperforms the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 in some key areas. The CPU performance of the X2 in both chips have the same basic performance. However, the MediaTek chip is more energy efficient, thanks to its TSMC 4nm manufacturing process. Previous test data shows that Dimensity 9000’s energy efficiency rating is 40-50% higher.
However, the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 is still superior in terms of gaming performance and ISP support is better. Plus, its camera seems to have an edge. These two points are the key points where the Dimensity 9000 is not dominant. Moreover, this chip is as fast as the Snapdragon 8 Gen1. So, except for manufacturers preferring the Snapdragon name, it wouldn’t be an easy first choice.
Another key competitor between the Dimensity 9000 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 is price. MediaTek definitely has a price advantage, but everyone is worried about how much cheaper it can be. Industry analysts claim that the market price of MediaTek chip is between $100 and $110 while Snapdragon 8 Gen1 is between $120 and $130. Based on these numbers, the Dimensity 9000 will be $30 cheaper than the Snapdragon 8 Gen1, and the price advantage is around 30%. However, the overall price difference between the two sides is not too high. MediaTek won’t be relying solely on price this time around. In competition, mobile phone manufacturers will choose two chips to create differentiated flagship mobile phones.
