New RoRo Cube supports shipping EV products

WALLENIUS Wilhelmsen has announced that it is developing a standardized packaging cube to enable electric vehicle products to be shipped on ro-ro ships.

The RoRo Cube is developed in partnership with galvanized container supplier Goodpack, the world’s largest supplier of returnable metal intermediate bulk containers.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen said the new packaging option allows shippers to transport foods such as natural and synthetic rubber, chemicals, electric vehicle batteries and automotive parts.

By developing the RoRo Cube, the company hopes to support electric vehicle supply chains to enable consumers to reduce global emissions.

Xavier Leroi, chief customer officer at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said the shift to electric vehicles is well underway.

“As this new sustainable fuel for vehicles becomes the new normal, it also comes with new challenges and opportunities,” Leroi said.

“The transport of vehicle batteries is an area of particular concern to us.”

The partnership with Goodpack is expected to initially focus on shipping services from South Korea. The country’s top three battery makers reportedly accounted for 32 percent of the global EV battery market last year.

“With Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s shipping and vehicle logistics, we see that there is a good fit between our business and Goodpack’s,” Leroi said.
