2021 has been a good year for the entire Indian handset market and in particular, the smartphone market has witnessed gains in terms of total shipments and revenue. Even 5G phone shipments were up.
It seems that this pandemic has skyrocketed the use of mobile phones due to the increase in working from home and online learning. So even though there is an ongoing chip crisis and phones are not always in stock, it has not stopped or slowed down the Indian smartphone market. On the contrary, 2021 has seen an increase in the overall handset market of 7% compared to the same period last year. This data comes from a technology market analyst Counterpointwhose Market Monitor service reveals the growth of the Indian smartphone market in terms of total shipments and revenue.
Along with this 7% YoY market expansion, the report also claims a 27% YoY increase in revenue, with a gain of $38 billion in that year alone. Shipments, meanwhile, soared 11% year-on-year. Additionally, 5G-enabled phones saw a 555% year-over-year shipment increase in 2021.
Now all the top brands in the market have performed well, it was Xiaomi that led the pack with a 24% share of the shipment pie. It garnered the highest share ever in the high-end smartphone space (>INR 30,000) with a year-on-year growth of 258%.
Then there is Realme which marked the fastest growing brand and managed to reach second place in the last quarter of 2021.
Other interesting findings from the report include:
- OnePlus recorded its highest shipments ever in India in 2021 with a lead in the price segment of ₹30,000 to ₹45,000.
- Meanwhile, Samsung had its grip on the ₹20,000 to ₹45,000 smartphone market.
