Three million doses of the Novavax vaccine have arrived on Australian shores, in the hope that they will help boost the overall vaccination rate.
Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says it’s a big step towards increasing the rate of double vaccination to 100%.
Novavax is the first protein-based vaccine made available in Australia and will be ready for use from February 18.
Hunt added that a shipment of 47 million snaps is on its way, after the first shipment landed in Sydney directly from Singapore.
The first batch will need to undergo testing by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
“Subject to successful batch testing, the Novavax vaccine will be available for administration,” Hunt said.
Although the protein-based jab hasn’t yet been approved for recall regulations, Hunt says it’s readily available for people over the age of 18.
“For some who may have had contraindications or reactions to other vaccines, this will provide them with an additional opportunity, as well as those who for some reason have not completed the program thus far.” , said Mr. Hunt.
“But I want to encourage everyone, unless there’s a contraindication, keep coming forward and taking the vaccines that exist.”
The federal government placed an order that exceeded 50 million doses of Novavax last year.
