There’s a ton of anticipation for Modern Warfare 2, and here’s everything we know about Call of Duty 2022 so far, including the release date, DMZ mode, and new game features.
Call of Duty returns to the present day, with Infinity Ward in charge of delivering Modern Warfare 2 as the 2022 entry in the iconic annual game franchise. While Modern Warfare 2 will share the same name as 2009’s Call of Duty, it’s actually a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare.
Following the Call of Duty Next event, we received a ton of new information regarding Modern Warfare 2, including the plethora of new features and release date.
Here’s everything we know about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release date
Call of Duty has announced that Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28, 2022.
The developers announced the release date through a video showing off Modern Warfare 2 art and key characters. Modern Warfare 2 then received an official worldwide reveal on June 8 which gave players a taste of what the game will bring.
Additionally, the Modern Warfare 2 campaign reveal took place during the Summer Game Fest on June 9. We also got our first look at multiplayer gameplay during the Call of Duty Next event which took place on September 15.
How to pre-order Modern Warfare 2
Pre-orders for Modern Warfare 2 were available from June 8 and to secure your copy you can visit the Call of Duty Shop. Once on the web page, select your platform and complete the transaction for the edition of your choice.
Activision no longer offers multiple versions of the game. This year, players can choose between two editions. The standard edition will cost $70, while the Vault edition will cost $99. That means there’s no longer a $60 edition as the cheapest version of Modern Warfare 2. For the first time since CoD: World War II, a new title will be available on Steam with the return of Modern Warfare 2 to the platform. It’s also important to note that those who pre-order Modern Warfare 2 will receive early access to the open beta.
Is Modern Warfare 2 a remake?
2022 Modern Warfare 2 is not a remake of Modern Warfare 2 from 2009. Instead, Modern Warfare 2 is a direct sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare and as such, it will share several features with the 2019 title.
The developers said they always drew inspiration from the past, but also “wanted to create new things”. While some aspects of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 may have inspired, Modern Warfare 2 should ultimately be an all-new title.
Also, Modern Warfare 2 will not look like a simple Modern Warfare reskin. The developers have confirmed that every aspect of the game is redone and modified.
Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Beta
Modern Warfare 2 will have an open beta ahead of its October 28 release. It first became available from September 16 for PlayStation users who have pre-ordered the game. Then it will open to other players on the platform from September 18 to 20.
Xbox and PC owners who pre-ordered Modern Warfare 2 can enjoy the open beta starting at September 22 to 23and it will finally be open to players on all platforms of September 24 to 26.
Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Details
Modern Warfare 2’s campaign takes place three years after the events of Modern Warfare (2019). The story follows Task Force 141 after an American strike kills a foreign general.
The group vows revenge, so Task Force 141 teams up with Mexican Special Forces to stop the threat. Interestingly, Activision has confirmed that anyone who pre-orders a digital edition of Modern Warfare can access the full campaign more than a week before launch.

Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Details
For starters, Modern Warfare 2 will feature base maps designed for 6vs6 gameplay and combat maps designed for large team play. So far, seven maps have been revealed and you can check out our guide to all confirmed Modern Warfare 2 maps.
In terms of game modes, players can expect a mix of old favorites and new innovations. Prisoner Rescue and Knockout are just two of the new Modern Warfare 2 modes that have been revealed, while Special Ops and Gunfight are set to return to the franchise.
The new content doesn’t stop there as the developers have completely overhauled the way the AI will interact with players in Modern Warfare 2. You can expect the AI to be much tougher and fiercer. Meanwhile, new movement mechanics, including swimming, allowed the developers to emphasize water design throughout the multiplayer experience.
Player customization is once again at the forefront of the series and you will have a new and improved gunsmith system to use in Modern Warfare 2. ‘benefits will also have a new feel. in Modern Warfare 2.
It’s safe to say that CoD fans have received two major items on their wishlist as the developers have confirmed that a third-person mode will return to the franchise and console gamers will receive an FOV slider feature.

Modern Warfare 2 RICOCHET anti-cheat
On June 16, the Call of Duty developers confirmed in a progress report that the RICOCHET anti-cheat system will be active from day one in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.
While running into cheaters is still a problem you might face in the game, the developers promised the community that RICOCHET will continue to “get smarter and better over time.” RICOCHET is expected to deliver enhanced features by the time the games are ready to launch.
Warzone 2 Integration
Activision has officially confirmed that Warzone 2 will be an all-new game separate from Warzone. The all-new Warzone experience will feature “new Modern Warfare II content and systems with all-new progression,” resetting Warzone player inventories.

Modern Warfare 2 Leaks
RalphsValve and Tom Henderson have both claimed that classic maps from Modern Warfare 2 (2009) will be coming to CoD 2022.
RalphsValve has leaked five maps players can expect to see in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. These are some of the most popular in the entire series and we may see them return.
Here are the Modern Warfare 2 returning maps:
A later report from industry insider Tom Henderson said these maps should be coming to Warzone 2, but may not be available when MW2 launches. Instead, players may have to wait for them to be added to multiplayer after launch.
After Call of Duty Next, we know that classic Modern Warfare 2 maps will act as POIs in the Al Mazrah map of Warzone 2, which confirms part of Henderson’s report.
It remains to be seen if these nostalgic locales will make their way to Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer.
The Call of Duty team has finally confirmed the existence of DMZ on Call of Duty Next. The mode will arrive as a free-to-play experience at the start of Modern Warfare 2 Season 1, alongside the launch of Warzone 2.0 on November 16.
While we still don’t have full details regarding the game mode, it has been described as “MWII’s version on Escape From Tarkov”.
Players are expected to drop in multiple locations and will have to loot houses, buildings, vehicles, crates, and abandoned corpses. DMZ mode will take place on the Warzone 2 Al Mazrah map.
Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ would also have a market where players can buy and sell items. When you enter this game mode, you can head to the market to “win skins, blueprints, and more.”
