CBP intercepts shipment of fake driver’s licenses to Cincinnati

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intercepted a shipment of counterfeit driver’s licenses passing through the Cincinnati port of entry, the agency said in a statement. statement tuesday.

“Counterfeit driver’s licenses are being used by young adults who have not yet reached legal drinking age,” Port of Cincinnati Director Richard Gillespie said in the statement.

“We want these college-aged students to realize that they are enabling criminal enterprises,” Gillespie continued.. “Our officers here in Cincinnati are committed to protecting the American public, and that includes stopping fraudulent documents such as these counterfeit driver’s licenses from entering the United States.”

CBP officers have seized 47 shipments containing a total of 119 counterfeit U.S. driver’s licenses from across the country since early February, the agency said. They were all from Hong Kong and were heading to homes across the country. The licenses were all concealed in books and documents.

CBP says counterfeit licenses can be used to facilitate other crimes.

“Some of the top concerns with fraudulent ID documents include identity theft, construction site law enforcement, critical infrastructure protection, fraud related to immigration related crimes such as smuggling smuggling and human trafficking,” said LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, director of field operations at CBP’s Chicago field office.
